LEARNING FROM THE ORIGINAL STORYTELLERS
My career began with the Hearst Corporation. I was one of 3 individuals hired to work for Walter Meade (President/Editor-in-Chief of Avon Books) to create a spin-off of Harper’s Bazaar called Men’s Bazaar. This assignment introduced me to the world of publishing, editorial design, best-in-class writing, and led to roles at Cosmopolitan, Model, Lear’s, and ultimately to the Art Director position for the alternative music publication SPIN.
My experience in publishing instilled a love for evocative storytelling through fashion, beauty, photography, video, music, design, and of course, writing. It exposed me to the industry’s best-and-brightest editors, design directors, and photographers— such as; Cosmopolitan Magazine founder and editor-in-chief, Helen Gurley Brown; award-winning design director of Lear’s, Ron Albrecht; and top tier photographers such as Michael Tighe, Anton Corbin, the Douglas Brothers, Jesse Frohman, Greg Watermann, Danny Clinch, Renee Miville, and Guzman.
SPIN MAGAZINE
As Art Director of SPIN, I led a comprehensive redesign to elevate the publication while retaining the raw energy of the alternative music scene. 4 years at SPIN provided many unique creative opportunities. Most notable was being the first AD to put Nirvana on the cover of a national magazine, followed 1 year later by creating a music-icon-family cover portrait featuring Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love and baby Francis Bean.
